History

Rose Opticians has been established as a family business for over 50 years. Founded by qualified optometrist Stuart Rose in 1965, it continues to be run to this day by his son Simon Rose.

Stuart Rose qualified as an Optometrist in 1961 at what is now City University. Upon graduation he became a Fellow of the Spectacle Makers Company and Fellow of the College of Optometrists.

He went on to lecture in contact lenses at City University and at the London School of Optometry. Stuart opened his first practice in Southend in 1962 followed by further branches in Woodford, Hatfield, Bedford and then in Gants Hill and Woodford Bridge.

After selling these practices with the exception of Gants Hill, he went on to open a practice in Waltham Cross and one in the Harvey Centre in Harlow. The Harlow practice was one of the first in the country to open in a shopping centre with an open fronted design, rather than the usual closed-door policy that was the norm 30 years ago.

The Rose Opticians group ran clinical trials for the first soft contact lenses in the UK and was European agent for Hanita, now part of the Bausch and Lomb group. It was, and still remains a provider of spectacles to many large corporate companies such as Plessey Siemens. Rose Opticians Group has also been opticians to Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club since 1991.

In 2005 Stuart’s son Simon, a qualified Optometrist, joined him. Simon Rose completed his Master’s Degree in Optometry specialising in the investigation of people with learning difficulties, glaucoma, binocular vision, advanced contact lenses and paediatric optometry. The company went on to open a state of the art practice in Hertford and most recently have opened a practice in Hackney.

Stuart also founded the largest domiciliary care group in London and the Home Counties and continues to operate domiciliary services to the housebound.

Rose Opticians continue to use the latest technology equipment and offer modern techniques that are not always available at multiple groups. To give example, Orthokeratology, Ocular Coherence Tomography and Fundus Photography are some of our specialist areas.

Currently, Rose Opticians are continuing to grow as one of the leading opticians in South East England and is proud of its commitment to the advancement of eye health and the range of bespoke services we are able to offer to our patients.
